The various natural and man-made disasters and/or structural collapse so far all around the world justify the immense importance of an integrated application of the specialized knowledge of civil engineering; precisely, the Geotechnical, Hydraulic, Earthquake and Structural Engineering including Mechanical, Bio-mechanical and Aeronautical Engineering, among others.

The researches into the problems involving Geotechnics, Earthquakes and structures are widespread worldwide which, for instance, may be depicted from the articles published in a wide range of scientific journals and other technical reports. The developed countries like Japan and the USA have already come a long way in identifying solutions and preparing the design manuals for various sorts of practical problems. The development has been possible through the rigorous investigation and learning generally following the extreme disaster-experiences. The rapidly developing countries in the neighborhood of Nepal are also found especially serious and careful in these categories of research.

On contrary, Nepal (a representative slowly developing country) despite located in one of the very high seismic regions of the world, as such does not have very reliable design guidelines of its own, and in many cases, the designs have been approximately empirical; say, by the thumb rule. In such special situations, we have no option than going from scratch, dealing from the viewpoint of basic science and engineering (for example, by applying the basic principles of mechanics together with the development of required numerical programs including on the spreadsheet/MS-Excel) and/or by utilizing the available sophisticated numerical tools based on continuum or discrete modelling, giving due importance to the open-source/access programs. Such analyses-results shall lead towards identifying not only the reliable solution/s of a complex problem that is practically impossible by the traditional methods but also the reliable, effective and optimal solution/s of a regular problem. Moreover, this approach of investigation may be expected to open up the opportunities of identifying and applying new construction materials, devices and technology, overall.

On top of the background, the need of an institute that purely researches into the core issues of analysis and design of the structural systems of soils, rocks, concretes, steels or any composite materials, with special emphasis on extreme loading such as earthquakes, in addition to other integrated multidisciplinary problems such as issues of sustainable built environment and urban future, are felt of utmost importance and need in the country like Nepal. The core emphasis of the research shall be on the reliable load assessment, reliable but yet simplified methods of structural analyses fully supported by Mechanics and the effective and optimal design solutions of any sort of (geotechnical) structural systems, especially resistant to earthquake induced forces. Dam, embankments, slopes, buildings, bridges, impact protective structural systems etc. are the common problems of scope. Problems requiring interdisciplinary application of structural engineering principles and tools shall be preferred. Based on the mentioned areas of targeted research, the institute (research center) has been proposed a clearly specific name as: “Geotechnical, Hydraulic, Earthquake and Structural Engineering Solutions International Pvt. Ltd.”
